Christian Encounters – George Washington Carver by John Perry

This book is a detailed account of Dr. Carver’s life.  It is an interesting book to read.  As detailed as it is, I was surprised that Mr. Perry didn’t affirm nor discredit the notion that George Washington Carver saved a community ruined by the boll weevil beetle.  Mr. Perry wrote that Dr. Carver was working hard to find something farmers could plant instead of cotton, but I’d always heard that George Washington Carver was famous for telling farmers to plant peanuts when the boll weevil beetle destroyed their cotton crops.

What Mr. Perry did write about Dr. Carver was information I had never been exposed to other than the fact that he was born as a slave and became a scientist of renown.

I had also not known before reading this book that George Washington Carver was a Christian, especially not one who was very evangelistic.

Mr. Perry went into great detail about the circumstances of Dr. Carver’s life, his friends, his passions, personality, convictions, and loyalties.  Things like his love of drawing and painting, how he befriended everyone he came in contact with, and taught Bible studies on Sunday evenings for years, but never from the pages of a Bible, but rather from nature and memorized scriptures.

I’d recommend the book to anyone wanting to know more about Dr. Carver.  One can find inspiration in Dr. Carver’s life in his perseverance, his devotion to seeing God’s handiwork in all nature, and his Christian attitude toward people who persecuted him.

The book was written in a fairly cohesive manner and for the most part appealing.
